This folio comes from the Chunar Ragamala, a landmark manuscript in the history of Rajasthani painting. The three named artists — Shaykh Husayn, Shaykh Ali, and Shaykh Hatim, were trained in Akbar's imperial workshop under the great Mughal masters Mir Sayyid Ali and Abd al-Samad, and worked at Chunar near Varanasi around 1591, and later in Bundi and Kota in Rajasthan. The manuscript was most likely commissioned by Ratan Singh, son of the Bundi ruler Bhoj Singh, who was left in charge of Chunar.
