Amrita Shergill
1913 – 1941
Trained at Ecole des Beaux-Arta in Paris, Shergill imbibed the formal language of the post impressionists, especially of Paul Gaugin. But through her exposure to western art she discovered India. After returning to India, through she earnestly tried to discover tradition Indian art in all its diversity and explore these contacts in her work, she found it difficult to undo her western training completely.
