Impressionism was a French movement, roughly 1860s–1880s, that broke from academic Salon conventions. The name came derisively from Monet's Impression, Sunrise (1872), coined by critic Louis Leroy in 1874. The first independent group exhibition was held in 1874 in Nadar's former studio.
